Kevin Day [AGE 37]

Assistant Chief Engineer-Technology, Testing and Standards
CN

Education: Kansas State University, bachelor's degree in civil engineering; University of Illinois, master's degree in civil engineering specializing in railway engineering

Career highlights: Day joined CN in 2002 as an engineering management trainee. Since then, he relocated nine times to fulfill various roles, such as project engineer, bridge supervisor, and manager of structures, as well as senior roles in design and construction, field engineering and track services.

Why rail? Day was always interested in engineering, and was exposed to rail as a child through his dad's interest in trains. "But I don't think I really understood the opportunity available in the railroad industry until I got to the University of Illinois and enrolled in their railway engineering program, which really opened my eyes."

Making a difference in rail transportation by ... "pursuing technological change and advancement to make the railroad safer. Another major item that I spend a lot of time on is coaching and mentoring less experienced or younger employees, and trying to inspire and motivate them to do their best."

Five-year goal: "Continue to provide strategic guidance within the engineering function. I enjoy leading people and guiding my team toward meeting our business objectives."

Active in: American Railway Engineering and Maintenance Association, Committee 2 (Track Measuring Systems)

His philosophy: "Always give your best effort. Lead by example, perform your work with integrity and be professional with others. Hire smart people, get out of their way and let them do their jobs."

Interesting fact: He played two years of basketball at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kan.

Nominator's observation: "[Kevin] is focusing his team on reducing engineering incidents and preventing derailments across the CN system, and reviewing new technologies globally to find the right mix to improve track safety." — David Ferryman, CN
