Job Responsibilities: Plays a strategic role in shaping the organization’s culture. Oversees talent management, designing and implementing competitive compensation and benefit packages; ensures compliance with relevant law and regulations; collaborates with leadership to align HR initiatives with the organization’s goals.
Career path: In 2009, I joined The Indiana Rail Road (INRD) as entry-level office manager. As I gained experience, I took on more responsibility and eventually leadership roles within the organization. I have held positions across INRD departments, including human resource generalist, director of human resources and executive assistant to the president and CEO. I have been in my current role since early 2023.
How did you get into the railroad industry? It was a combination of seizing opportunities and following my interests. I was connected to a hiring manager at INRD while exploring career opportunities out of college. As I delved into it, I discovered a passion for the work and a natural fit for my skills. Plus, it’s an industry with great benefits and plays a vital role in transportation, commerce and economic development.
What’s the best career advice that you’ve received? To continuously seek knowledge and be open to new ideas or change to allow for personal and professional growth.
What advice would you share with someone new to railroading? Find a mentor, immerse yourself in the fundamentals of railroad operations and safety protocols, ask questions, and get to know people across the organization. It's an exciting industry to work in, with long-term career opportunities and robust retirement benefits.
What was your first job? Cleaning office spaces and houses. While not glamorous, it did instill important life skills and a strong work ethic.
Share a fun fact about yourself. I played for Indiana State University’s Division I soccer program. I still play soccer once a week.
If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why? My parents. Spending time with them over a meal allows for meaningful conversation, laughter and reminiscing about experiences.
Who has had the most influence on your career and why? Thomas Hoback, founder of the Indiana Rail Road Co. He shared his knowledge and experience, offering insights into the railroad industry, professional development opportunities and constructive feedback. Learning from Tom’s innovative thinking and observing his entrepreneurial spirit and leadership provided valuable lessons that have guided my career journey.
Describe a major obstacle in your career and how you surmounted it. COVID-19 presented a significant obstacle due to its sudden and widespread impact. I, with the help of many, was able to surmount the obstacle through a combination of adaptability, empathy and strategic planning.
What is the biggest challenge facing the rail industry today? Hiring is a significant challenge. Finding candidates who are capable and willing to work irregular schedules, be exposed to harsh weather conditions, prioritize safety and adhere to strict regulations is an ongoing difficulty.
