Federal Transit Administration recently named Bernard Cohen director of the administration’s Lower Manhattan Recovery Office (LMRO).

With 20 years’ experience in public transportation, Cohen most recently served as deputy managing director for mobilization for Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co., which operates Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

He previously held senior management positions at New York Metropolitan and Southeastern Pennsylvania transportation authorities, where he was responsible for operations, capital planning and construction, strategic business development and long-range planning.

Since its 2002 opening, the LMRO has worked to restore transportation to lower Manhattan. Officials have managed the design and implementation of a risk-assessment system, negotiated an environmental review process, and reached a model project development and construction management agreement that will apply to future transit projects, according to a prepared statement.
