Yesterday, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) announced it appointed John Joyce transit police chief to succeed John Joyce. That’s no mistake — John K. Joyce retired from the RTA police department June 1 after more than 14 years as transit police chief and will be succeeded by John P. Joyce. The two aren’t related.

John P. Joyce recently retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after serving more than 25 years as a special agent. As a supervisor in St. Louis, New York City, Washington, D.C. and Cleveland, he managed investigations dealing with organized and white-collar crime. Joyce most recently worked as assistant special agent in charge of the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office.

At RTA, Joyce will focus on terrorism detection, prevention and training, in addition to daily police responsibilities.

"The acts of 9/11, along with continued terrorism around the world, particularly the Madrid, Spain, transit system bombing and the London bombing … these are all very real threats," he said in a prepared statement. "I want to ensure that RTA is as prepared as possible for the environment we live in today."
