The Southern Railway of British Columbia Ltd. (SRY) recently appointed Frank Butzelaar president to succeed John van der Burch, who retired Jan. 1 after holding the top post since May 2000.

Butzelaar also will serve as president of Southern Railway of Vancouver Island Ltd., a SRY subsidiary formerly headed by van der Burch.

Butzelaar most recently served as executive vice president. Since joining SRY in 1993, he has held various management positions, including market manager and director of business development-forest products.

Owned by The Washington Cos., SRY operates a 75-mile line in British Columbia's lower mainland and Fraser Valley. The short line interchanges with Canadian National Railway Co., Canadian Pacific Railway, BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad. Southern Railway of Vancouver Island provides freight- and passenger-rail service between Victoria and Courtenay on the province's largest island.
