Union Pacific Railroad recently named Michael Rock vice president of external relations to succeed Mary McAuliffe, who plans to retire in early 2008. Rock will be responsible for the Class I's government affairs operation in Washington, D.C.

Rock most recently was assistant VP of external relations. He has served UP's D.C. office for 16 years, including a stint as director of Washington affairs for transportation. Prior to joining UP, Rock held various government positions, including deputy director of congressional affairs under U.S. Transportation Secretary Sam Skinner and legislative director for Congressman Bud Shuster (R-Pa.).

Meanwhile, BNSF Railway Co. named Rob Karov assistant VP of labor relations to succeed Dennis Merrell, who will retire Oct. 31.

Karov most recently served as general director of labor relations. He previously held the titles of manager of labor relations and director of labor relations since joining BNSF in 1993.
