President Barack Obama has appointed Beverly Scott, general manager and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), to the National Infrastructure Advisory Council (NIAC).

Scott is one of five new appointees to NIAC, whose members are charged with proposing way to safeguard transportation infrastructure, as well as commercial and manufacturing facilities, key information systems, and dams and waterways.

In a statement, President Obama praised Scott and the panel’s other new members for their respective expertise. The council will meet four times a year and focus on enhancing cooperation between the public and private sectors on infrastructure matters.

“It is absolutely imperative that we make prudent decisions about the future of the roads, bridges, transit systems and other key infrastructure networks that not only make us strong and keep us safe, but which will ensure we maintain a competitive advantage in an increasingly global economy,” Scott said in a prepared statement.

Scott has served as MARTA’s CEO and general manager since 2007. Her 32-year career includes several senior-level management positions at transit systems in Sacramento, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey. She began her career at the Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority.
