The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has named Bill Burke chief of police.

In the new position, Burke will provide MTS officials with greater access to crime information and enhance the agency’s role with police departments in the investigation and prevention of crime on the agency’s trolley and bus network, MTS officials said in a prepared statement.

“Additionally, this position allows MTS to apply for state and federal transportation law enforcement and Homeland Security grants,” said Chief Executive Officer Paul Jablonski. “The grants will equip MTS with the most up-to-date security systems.”

Prior to the appointment, Burke had served as the agency’s director of security. He joined MTS in December 2001. Under Burke’s direction, the agency achieved one of the lowest crime rates among public transit systems in the country, MTS officials said.
