The National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP) has presented Rep. Patrick Meehan (R-Pa.) with the Golden Spike Award for the congressman’s “outstanding work in supporting intercity passenger rail, commuter rail and transit,” according to a press release

NARP, which presented the award earlier this week, noted Meehan’s effort as a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee — and specifically, the Railroad subcommittee — to ensure the committee finds the “right balance between the pressing investment needs of U.S. infrastructure and a tight fiscal environment.”

The association’s Golden Spike Award honors individuals who support a fully developed passenger-rail network and demonstrate leadership in promoting rail development.

When Meehan addressed NARP’s board and council last year, “he spoke eloquently about the importance of passenger trains in providing transportation options for injured veterans and other mobility-impaired Americans,” NARP President Ross Capon said in a prepared statement. “It was a powerful reminder about the need to work across party lines to keep America moving.”

“So many Americans, particularly in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, rely on our nation’s railways each day, which is why it’s so important that we protect this mode of transportation,” said Meehan, whose home state of Pennsylvania is served by 12 of Amtrak’s services.
