George Greanias, president and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) in Houston, has announced plans to resign, effective Dec. 31.

The agency's board will meet Thursday to discuss the search for his successor and options for selecting an interim CEO, METRO officials said in a prepared statement.

Greanias was named CEO more than two years ago after heading Houston Mayor Annise Parker's METRO Transition Team. His goals for the agency included reorganizing the agency's top management, getting the rail construction program on track and securing $900 million in federal funding for rail.

"Thanks to a talented and dedicated staff and support from the METRO board, we have accomplished those major goals," said Greanias. "Now is the right time for me to step down and create the next chapter in my career."

Among the agency's accomplishments during Greanias' tenure: resolving problems with METRO's "Buy America" program, addressing Federal Transit Administration concerns over METRO procurements, and fostering a culture of openness and transparency, agency officials said.
