California Gov. Jerry Brown has appointed Katherine Perez-Estolano to the California High-Speed Rail Authority's (CHSRA) board.

Perez-Estolano is an adjunct professor at the University of California School of Policy, Planning and Development. She's also co-founder of Estolano LeSar Perez Advisors L.L.C., a firm that works with cities, agencies, business groups and other stakeholders to craft environmental solutions for economic development and transportation policies.

Perez-Estolano is considered an expert in transportation planning, land use policy and transit-oriented development issues, CHSRA Chairman Dan Richard said in a prepared statement.

"The appointment of Ms. Perez-Estolano will strengthen our efforts to ensure that high-speed rail is built with sensitivity to local issues and with a commitment to sustainable development in the communities we serve," he said.

Prior to co-founding her firm, Perez-Estolano served as executive director of the Urban Land Institute, Los Angeles District Council.

Meanwhile, the authority will hold a series of workshops this month and next to educate small-business owners interested in becoming certified to participate in the $68.4 billion project, which involves the construction of a 520-mile high-speed line between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
