Vermont Rail System (VRS) has announced that Chief Mechanical Officer Paul Martin will retire today after 42 years of service.Martin began his career as a carman with the Vermont Railway on April 27, 1972, and later held a variety of positions, including yard engineer, shop foreman and signal maintainer.Starting in 1984 — and for the next 30 years — Martin was responsible for keeping the company's growing fleet of locomotives pulling freight, VRS officials said in a retirement announcement. As superintendent of motive power and then CMO, he managed the fleet of GP-9, GP-18, GP-38 and GP-40 units."With growing demand on the roster, his skills were challenged and proved often," VRS officials said. "He will be missed."VRS owns and operates the Clarendon & Pittsford Railroad, Green Mountain Railroad Corp., New York & Ogdensburg Railway, Vermont Railway and Washington County Railroad.
