SEPTA's GM Casey to retire

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) General Manager Joseph Casey announced Wednesday that he will retire Sept. 30 from his post.

During a 34-year career at the agency, Casey has served in several roles, including six years as chief financial officer and treasurer, SEPTA officials said in a press release.

He also held senior management positions in internal audit and finance.

Casey's efforts led to balanced operating budgets, and also helped streamline expenses, reduce costs and contain overall budget growth, SEPTA officials said.

"Joe has led SEPTA through challenging times, while consistently improving SEPTA's performance, customer service and overall public perception," said SEPTA Chairman Pasquale Deon. "His leadership and expertise have been keys to moving SEPTA forward."

As general manager, Casey created a dedicated customer service and advocacy division, and focused on SEPTA's "Four Cs:" cleanliness, convenience, courtesy and communication.

SEPTA officials also credited Casey's "tireless" advocacy for finding long-term transit funding with the passage of Pennsylvania's Act 89 in January 2014. The legislation provides dedicated funding for a slew of transportation projects in the state.
