New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie late last week appointed Richard Hammer acting commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

Christie also announced in a press release his plans to formally nominate Hammer to succeed Jamie Fox, who announced his resignation last month.

Currently assistant commissioner, Hammer is responsible for the department's capital program management section, where he oversees 1,100 employees throughout six divisions.

During his tenure as assistant commissioner, Hammer has led major infrastructure initiatives to improve New Jersey's transportation network.

"I appreciate him stepping up to this next challenge in his long career of public service at the Department, and look forward to having him join my cabinet," Christie said.
