The Association of American Railroads (AAR) and GoRail announced yesterday they've awarded the Railroad Achievement Award to U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) for demonstrating leadership on policies that ensure the viability of U.S. freight and passenger railroads.
Reed is the top Democrat on the Senate Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development.
“Sen. Reed is a proven leader in forging bipartisan solutions through the Appropriations Committee, including policies related to economic development and U.S. infrastructure,” said AAR President and Chief Executive Officer Ian Jefferies in a press release.
Reed has backed grant programs to support public-private partnerships in the industry, including the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency Program (CREATE) in Chicago, a $3.2 billion project to improve the Chicago area's rail network.
He also has helped keep "controversial riders out of appropriations bills and fighting for funding for grant programs to improve highway rail grade crossings, as well as passenger rail," Jefferies said.
GoRail President Russel McGurk noted Reed’s success in securing funding to improve rail access at the Quonset Business Park and the Port of Davisville in Rhode Island.
