The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has appointed Jeffrey Tumlin director of transportation, effective Dec. 16.

Tumlin most recently was a principal at Nelson/Nygaard Consulting Associated, where he led a number of neighborhood plans aimed at accommodating thousands of new residents by mitigating traffic and promoting better transit services.

He currently leads the San Francisco Transportation Authority's downtown congestion pricing study, which focuses on enhancing mobility to advance equity and promote small businesses. Two years ago, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf asked Tumlin to help create a new transportation department, which he led for nine months.

"Jeff is a true talent with a clear vision on how cities should serve its residents," said SFMTA Chair Malcolm Heinicke in a press release. "He is a well-respected industry leader known for implementing value-based solutions that move cities forward."

Globally, Tumlin is renowned for using limited resources to maximize community success, SFMTA officials said.
