The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) has appointed Jennifer Bergener deputy chief executive officer. She succeeds Kenneth Phipps, who retired last month.

Bergener will help oversee 1,300 employees and a $1.5 billion annual budget, OCTA officials said in a press release.

Bergener has served in management roles at OCTA for 17 years, most recently as chief operating officer. She'll continue serving as COO in her new role, which includes responsibility for the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor Agency (LOSSAN). LOSSAN is the managing agency for the state-supported Amtrak-operated Pacific Surfliner service.

In her first weeks as deputy CEO, Bergener has managed stepped up cleaning and continued operations of OCTA’s essential services as part of the agency’s task force responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bergener has more than 20 years of experience as a transit professional. In 2014, Progressive Railroading honored her as a Rising Star in the rail industry.
