The National Mediation Board (NMB) last week announced the appointment of Kyle Fortson as chairman effective July 1. She serves on the board with Gerald Fauth and Linda Puchala.
Fortson joined the NMB in November 2017 and previously served as chair from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019. Puchala chaired the board from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020.
Prior to joining the board, Fortson served as labor policy director for the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, working directly for Chairman Lamar Alexander. She was responsible for all labor, employment and workplace safety issues in the committee’s jurisdiction. She previously was a counsel to a member of the House Judiciary Committee.
During her NMB tenure, Fortson has emphasized reducing a long-standing backlog of arbitration cases and so far the caseload has decreased by nearly 60 percent, board officials said in a press release. She also realigned the agency’s structure to enhance and modernize support services.
An independent agency, the NMB governs labor management relations in the railroad and airline industries.
