The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) yesterday appointed Ronald Ester Jr. as chief safety officer.

Previously, Ester spent 28 years at the Chicago Transit Authority where he served as chief safety and security officer, vice president of rail operations and capital projects oversight, and VP of rail operations and communication-power control.

“Ron [Ester] has walked in the shoes of both the chief safety officer and transit operations,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak in a press release. “This unique blend of experience will serve the MBTA well and help us deliver a best-in-class safety program.”

In his new role, Ester will be responsible for strategic policy development, management and oversight of safety programs.
