On Friday, Union Pacific Corp. announced Vice Chairman James Dolan, and Senior Vice President and General Counsel Carl von Bernuth will retire.

After joining UP as vice president of law in 1983, Dolan served in various senior law positions until he was appointed vice chairman in 2002. He previously served as a partner with Washington, D.C., law firm Steptoe & Johnson.

"Jim's leadership and advice have been invaluable," said UP Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dick Davidson in a prepared statement.

In 1980, von Bernuth joined UP as associate general counsel. He later served as deputy general counsel, finance and administration, and VP and general counsel.

To succeed von Bernuth, UP named Union Pacific Railroad VP-Law J. Michael Hemmer SVP-law and general counsel for the corporation and railroad. In addition, SVP of Human Resources Barbara Schaefer will assume von Bernuth's corporate secretary duties.

UP also promoted Senior Corporate Counsel James Theisen Jr. to assistant general counsel and assistant secretary, and General Contract Counsel Christine Smith to assistant general counsel.

Theisen has served the corporation and railroad in various legal positions since joining UP in 1995. Smith joined UP in 1978, serving in various legal capacities until becoming general contract counsel in 1992.
