Gov. Larry Hogan named James Ports Jr. to succeed Greg Slater as secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), effective Jan. 11.

Ports currently is executive director of the Maryland Transportation Authority, where he oversees the state’s toll facilities and E-ZPass Maryland system.

He previously served as MDOT’s deputy secretary under two administrations. In addition, Ports previously was deputy administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and chief executive officer for Harford County’s transit system.

Slater has accepted a new job in the transportation industry outside of Maryland.
