Paul Wingo, a former international and national vice president for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, died yesterday. He was 78.
Wingo retired in 2006 following a four-year term as one of the union’s top leaders. Before serving as VP, he was elected as first alternate international VP in 2001 and was later elevated to the BLE Advisory Board in 2002.
Following four years of U.S. Marine Corps active duty, Wingo began his railroading career in 1966 when he was hired as a switchman with the Southern Railway (now Norfolk Southern Railway). He was later promoted to locomotive engineer and joined BLE Division 198 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1969.
Over the next 37 years, Wingo held numerous elected offices within the union, including as Division 198 secretary-treasurer, legislative representative and local chairman. He also served as secretary-treasurer of the Norfolk Southern General Committee of Adjustment and as secretary-treasurer of the Tennessee State Legislative Board.
"Paul Wingo dedicated himself to serving the members of our brotherhood," said BLET National President Dennis Pierce in a press release.
During his VP tenure, Wingo's accomplishments included negotiating the first short-term disability agreement for BLET members working at NS, union officials said.
