The National Association of Railway Business Women this week elected Ida Carmouche president.
She is the first woman of color to serve in the role since the association was founded 100 years ago, NARBW officials said in a press release.
Carmouche previously served as NARBW's national vice president and second vice president. She was also elected the association's National Woman of the Year in 2012.
She started her career at Houston Belt and Terminal Railway Co. in the clerical department. After a merger, Carmouche joined BNSF Railway Co., where she spent 40 years in administration and operations. She was also a pilot member of the the BNSF Diversity Council. Carmouche retired from the Class I in 2019.
NARBW strives to get women interested in working in rail and helps its members further their educational and professional interests. The organization has 14 chapters in the United States.
