Transportation Communications Union/IAM National Vice President and National Legislative Director William DeCarlo retired July 1.

He was elected to the position in January 2020 and then re-elected in 2022. Prior to that, DeCarlo was a TCU national representative.

He was an unflagging advocate for the union and constantly worked to improve members’ lives, TCU officials said in a press release.

“Whether it was on the property as a local representative or working on Capitol Hill, Billy has spent an entire career as a tireless voice for his union brothers and sisters. Our union is better because of [his] contributions and we will miss him, but we wish him a happy and healthy retirement,” said TCU National President Artie Maratea.

DeCarlo began his career in 1978 as a station cleaner for the Long Island Rail Road. Before retiring from the commuter railroad in 2010, he served stints as a travel info clerk, ticket clerk, ticket agent/block operator, TVM agent and supervising TVM agent.

He became TCU Lodge 177’s legislative representative in 1995 and was elected lodge president in 1999. DeCarlo later was elected chairman of TCU Local 177, chairman of TCU Board 167, vice general chairman of Board 167 and TCU’s general secretary-treasurer.
