The North County Transit District's board on Aug. 14 approved the appointment of Paul Ballard as interim executive director, effective Aug. 28.
Ballard’s appointment follows the planned retirement of current Executive Director Matthew Tucker, which was announced Aug. 7. Tucker will retire Sept.1.
Ballard will serve an initial four-month term at the San Diego-area agency, NCTD officials said in a press release. He recently served in similar interim chief executive roles at Trinity Metro in Fort Worth, Texas, and at the Regional Transportation District in Denver.
Ballard has extensive experience leading transit agencies throughout the country, and also served as president of Progressive Transportation Services and American Transit Corp.
"We are very pleased to have identified someone with Mr. Ballard’s executive-level experience to help guide the district in the coming months as the board conducts a process for the selection of a new executive director," said NCTD Chair Jewel Edson. "Paul will be a valuable resource for NCTD’s board and its employees during this transition."
The NCTD's services include Coaster commuter rail and Sprinter hybrid rail.
