President-elect Donald Trump announced over the weekend that former Pan Am Railway CEO David Fink is nominated as the next administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration.
"David will bring his 45+ years of transportation leadership and success, which will deliver the FRA into a new era of safety and technological innovation," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Pan Am was a 1,200-mile New England regional that CSX acquired in June 2022. Fink's appointment drew praise from American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association President Chuck Baker.
"David will bring a fulsome understanding of the entirety of the unique, interconnected U.S. freight rail network. As the CEO of short line railroad Pan Am Railways prior to its sale, David was an active and respected participant in our association," said Baker in a prepared statement. "Under his leadership, Pan Am was an industry-award winning company. He has extensive experience interacting with all of the relevant stakeholders in the rail industry."
The association is looking forward to working with Fink on "smart regulations that advance the safety of rail in the U.S. and on expediting the FRA’s critical infrastructure investment programs," Baker added.
Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner said in a prepared statement that Fink's extensive experience in rail and transportation makes him a "great" candidate to lead the FRA.
"Amtrak successfully collaborated with David on safety, technology, and passenger train performance while he led Pan Am Railways," said Gardner. "We look forward to working with Secretary Designee [Sean] Duffy, Administrator Designee Fink, President-elect Trump and Congress as we elevate the travel experience, revitalize the economy, create jobs, and transform intercity passenger rail for this great country."
