Earlier this week, the Canadian Railway Hall of Fame named former Canadian National Railway Co. President and Chief Executive Officer Ron Lawless, and former Prime Minister Sir John MacDonald as 2004 inductees.

Lawless was recognized for leading a team that introduced domestic and, later, international containerization to CN and its customers, and prepared the railroad for privatization in the mid-1990s. A past president of VIA Rail Canada and Bishop’s University, and governor emeritus of Concordia University, Lawless still serves as president and chairman of Montreal-based non-profit agency Old Brewery Mission.

MacDonald served as the "driving force" behind construction of Canadian Pacific Railway — Canada's first transcontinental railroad, hall officials said in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, the hall also named:
• Airchime as inductee in the technology category;
• railway telegrapher Vince Coleman and retired railroader James Sirois inductees in the heroes category; and
• Edmonton, Alberta, and McAdam, New Brunswick, inductees in the cities category.

The public submitted nominations to the hall, which opened in 2002.
