APTA honors agencies, leaders for excellence in public transportation

Yesterday, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) announced the individual and organizational winners of the 2012 APTA Awards at the association’s annual meeting in Seattle.

"The 2012 APTA Award winners are models of leadership and excellence in the public transportation industry in North America," said APTA President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Melaniphy in a prepared statement.

The organization winners were the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, which received the Innovation Award; the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, which earned the Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award; and the Rock Island County Metropolitan Mass Transit District (MetroLINK), which obtained the Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award.

Individuals recognized for excellence in advancing public transportation were Hatch Mott MacDonald Senior Vice President Peter Cipolla, who received the 2012 Hall of Fame Award; Long Beach Transit President and Chief Executive Officer Laurence Jackson, who won the Outstanding Public Transportation Manager Award; L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who earned the Local Distinguished Service Award; Parsons Brinckerhoff Senior Analyst Cliff Henke, who obtained the Outstanding Public Transportation Business Member Award; Lane Transit District Board President Gregory Evans, who received the first Outstanding Public Transportation Board Member Award; and Regional Transportation District of Denver Chairman Lee Kemp, who won the second Outstanding Public Transportation Board Member Award.
