American Public Transportation Association (APTA) President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Melaniphy has stepped down from his post, the association's board announced late last week.
APTA Vice President of Member Services Richard White has been named acting president and CEO in the interim, association officials said in a press release. The news comes weeks after New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) canceled its membership in APTA. In an April 8 letter, MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast cited frustrations with Melaniphy's leadership and compensation among his reasons for leaving the organization. The change in leadership is intended to encourage all APTA stakeholders, members and coalition partners to step forward with suggestions for improving the association at all levels, said APTA Chair Valarie McCall. The association will conduct a national search for Melaniphy's replacement and ensure that the process is transparent, McCall added.
