American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) President Richard Timmons has announced plans to retire no later than Aug. 31. He has served in the post since Sept. 3, 2002.

The association has launched a presidential search committee headed by ASLRRA Vice Chairman Ed McKechnie to find Timmon's successor. Letters of interest and resumes will be accepted until March 1.

"The association has been blessed by Rich Timmons' service as its president. Under his leadership, ASLRRA has greatly expanded both its membership and the scope and reach of its work on behalf of that membership," said ASLRRA Chairman Mike Ogborn in an item published in the association's latest "Views & News" newsletter. "In addition to accomplishments too numerous to mention, he has brought new prestige to, and recognition of, the association. I join with all ASLRRA members in wishing him a long, healthy and happy retirement."

Prior to joining the ASLRRA, Timmons was Norfolk Southern Railway's chief political liaison to the states of Pennsylvania and New York, representing the Class I's interests in legislative and regulatory policy. He previously served for 32 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a lieutenant general. His military career included a range of operational, political and staff assignments, including commander of the Eighth Army in Korea, chief of staff of the United Nations Command in Korea, commander of the 7th Infantry Division, executive officer to the Secretary of the Army and Army liaison officer to the U.S. Senate.
