Last week, the Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) board elected two African American women to serve in the top posts for the first time in the agency’s history. The board named Carole Ward Allen president and Lynette Sweet, vice president.
An instructor at Laney College, Allen has served on BART’s board since 1998. She previously served as assistant vice chancellor of the Peralta Colleges.
A BART board member since 2003, Sweet is executive director of the African American Interest Free Loan Association. She also serves as chairman of BART’s Security Advocacy Ad Hoc Committee.
