President Joe Biden yesterday designated Martin Oberman chairman of the Surface Transportation Board (STB).
Oberman was sworn in as a member of the STB on Jan. 22, 2019, and has served as vice chair since Jan. 6, 2020. He is serving his first five-year term following confirmation by the U.S. Senate in 2019. His current term expires Dec. 31, 2023, STB officials said in a press release.
A Chicago attorney, Oberman has had an extensive career in the public and private sectors, including service as a Chicago alderman, a member of commuter railroad Metra's board and most recently a member of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning's board.
Oberman's knowledge of rail operations and experience will serve him well as STB chair, said Association of American Railroads President and Chief Executive Officer Ian Jefferies in a prepared statement.
"With numerous pending proposals before the board, railroads urge the members to ground deliberations in sound economic principals and reject measures that would undermine the industry's ability to invest in and for the future," Jefferies said. "Freight railroads look forward to continued engagement with the new chairman about how the industry can continue to deliver for rail customers and the American public."
