President Joe Biden has nominated Nuria Fernandez to serve as administrator for the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
Fernandez was appointed deputy administrator on Jan. 20. Prior to joining the Biden administration, she was general manager and chief executive officer for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), helping to deliver projects, programs and transit services in California's Silicon Valley.
Before she led the VTA, Fernandez held leadership positions at some of the largest U.S. transit agencies, including chief operating officer for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City, and senior vice president of design and construction for the Chicago Transit Authority and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, consecutively.
Fernandez is the immediate past chair of the American Public Transportation Association. She also served on the boards of the Mineta Transportation Institute and The Transportation Learning Center, and on the Transportation Research Board's executive committee.
