On Nov. 5, CSX Corp. announced Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer P. Michael Giftos plans to retire March 31, 2004, at which time his responsibilities will be transferred to Senior Vice President-Merchandise Service Group Clarence Gooden.

Before assuming his current role in April 2000, Giftos served as CSX's chief legal officer for more than a decade.

"Mike Giftos and I have worked together closely for many years, and I have great admiration for the significant contributions he has made in many key areas over his 29-year career," said CSX Corp. Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, and CSX Transportation President and Chief Operating Officer Michael Ward in a prepared statement. "Mike has led us to marketing and sales excellence, enabling CSXT to achieve vitally important revenue growth in a challenging business environment."

Since joining CSX in 1970, Gooden has served in a number of senior positions, including CSX Intermodal president, and CSXT vice president of transportation field operations, vice president of system transportation and senior vice president-coal.

"Under Clarence's leadership, I am confident that CSXT will continue to lead in modal conversions and in capturing price and yield, building upon Mike's success in this important area," said Ward.
