The Alliance for Public Transportation (APT) recently named Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Mike Martinez a “Government Leader of the Year” for his “support of mass transit as part of the solution to the growth and congestion issues” in the Austin, Texas, region, Capital Metro officials said in a prepared statement.

Martinez has served on the board for more than four years and was elected chairman in January 2010. A retired firefighter, he also serves on the Austin City Council.

During his tenure on Capital Metro’s board, Martinez “has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving public transportation in our community,” said Capital Metro President and Chief Executive Officer Linda Watson. “Under his leadership, the board has made some difficult but necessary decisions resulting in a stronger, more accountable and efficient Capital Metro.”

APT is a nonprofit organization that promotes the importance and benefits of public transportation in central Texas.
