Today, Cedar American Rail Holdings Inc. announced it appointed Clyde Mittleider chief transportation officer to succeed Richard Awe, who retired last month. Most recently assistant chief transportation officer, Mittleider will be responsible for transportation operations, train dispatching and crew management for Cedar American’s Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern (DM&E) and Iowa, Chicago & Eastern railroads.

Since joining the DM&E in 1987, he has served superintendent-north, manager of train operations, locomotive engineer and conductor. In 1976, Mittleider began his railroad career with the former Milwaukee Road and Burlington Northern.

Cedar American also promoted General Manager of Rail-Car Fleet John Gabel to the newly created position of assistant vice president of customer service and equipment management. He will be responsible for Cedar American’s fleet of more than 9,000 cars, as well as car orders, distribution and leasing.

Since joining the DM&E in 1992, Gabel also has served as manager of stations and customer service. He previously held various positions — including superintendent of industry and yard systems, and yard clerk — at the Chicago and North Western Railroad.

Mittleider and Gabel will report to Executive Vice President-Operations Ed Terbell.
