Rail News: Railroading People
North Carolina’s Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) recently announced John Claflin has resigned as general manager.
During his four-year tenure, Claflin helped develop the Triangle regional rail project, a 28-mile passenger-rail line that will connect Raleigh and Durham, N.C. The agency recently removed the project from the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts process and began exploring new options to develop a transit system that best meets the area’s needs, according to a prepared statement.
“In light of the Triangle Regional Rail project’s recent shift in direction, I feel that this is the appropriate time to appoint new leadership to pursue TTA’s mission,” said Claflin.
Prior to joining TTA in 2002, Claflin served in various senior management positions at the Regional Transportation District of Denver, including assistant general manager and chief operations officer.
While the authority conducts a search for an interim replacement, TTA’s General Counsel Wib Gulley and Director of Finance and Administrative Services Saundra Freeman will temporarily divide the GM’s duties.
Meanwhile, TTA added two members to its board. The Raleigh City Council appointed Raleigh Downtowner Publisher and local television program producer Sig Hutchinson, and the Wake County Commission appointed KB Homes’ Eastern Regional Director for Government and Public Affairs Jeff Merritt to the board.
