The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has appointed Angela Dluger director of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) safety oversight team.

She replaces Sean Thompson, who left the FTA to become director of rail operations at the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority.

Dluger has 20 years of experience working for the federal government, at transit agencies and in consulting, according to her biography on the FTA website. She joined the FTA in 2010 in the Office of Budget and Policy.

In 2012, she joined the agency's safety programs transition team; two years later, she became deputy associate administrator in the FTA's office of transit safety and oversight.

Before joining the FTA, Dluger was an independent consultant for transportation sector workforce development. She has worked in service planning, service delivery, performance management, and the operations control center at transit agencies in San Jose and Chicago.

The FTA has been overseeing safety at WMATA since October 2015.
