Former Long Beach port GM McJunkin dies

On Jan. 2, former Port of Long Beach General Manager James McJunkin died. He was 82.
McJunkin joined the port in 1963, serving in the operations division. He was later promoted to assistant general manager before becoming the port’s top executive in 1977, a capacity he held until 1988.
Under McJunkin’s leadership, Port of Long Beach became one of the largest seaports in the world and the country’s second-busiest container port. He oversaw the development of the Wolrd Trade Center complex and is credited with helping spearhead some of the most significant trade-related projects in the region, including the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility railyard and Alameda Corridor rail expressway. After retiring from the port, McJunkin served as a consultant to the maritime industry.
Prior to joining the Port of Long Beach, he was director of the Northern California Ports and Terminals Bureau. He also served as traffic manager for the Port of Sacramento.
McJunkin is survived by his wife, Mary, and their four children.
