Former Surface Transportation Board Chairman Roger Nober soon will be practicing transportation law. Next week, he’ll join Steptoe & Johnson L.L.P. as a partner and begin serving in the firm’s Transportation Practice Group, which represents railroads, trucking companies, airlines and ports. Steptoe & Johnson’s rail clients include three of the four largest Class Is and the Association of American Railroads.

Prior to joining the STB in late 2002 to succeed former Chairman Linda Morgan, Nober served as counselor to the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Transportation, providing advice on freight- and passenger-rail, highway and mass transit, and aviation and aviation security issues. He also previously served as chief counsel to the House of Representatives Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure.

Last year, Nober decided not to seek a second term as STB chair and left the board after his term expired on Dec. 31.

“Nober has been on the front lines of US transportation policy [and] is well versed in the critical issues of transportation infrastructure funding and transportation security,” said Sam Sipe, who heads the transportation group, in a prepared statement.
