Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) recently appointed Paul Weyrich to the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission, which is developing the country’s surface transportation plan for the 21st century.
A former Amtrak Reform Council and Amtrak Board member, Weyrich serves as the chairman and chief executive officer of the Free Congress Foundation, a public policy institute that promotes public transportation.
The commission will determine how the development of surface transportation will impact national defense, safety, personal mobility and economic growth.
To be chaired by U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, the 12-member commission will be required to submit a surface transportation report to Congress by July 1, 2007.
