Yesterday, GATX Corp. announced it promoted Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President Brian Kenney to president. He will retain CFO responsibilities until his successor is named.

GATX officials expect to appoint Kenney chief executive officer at the company's annual shareholders meeting in April. Ronald Zech will continue to serve as CEO until the meeting, and as chairman until he retires in October 2005.

In 1995, Kenney joined GATX as treasurer. He was promoted to VP of finance in 1998, CFO in 1999 and SVP in 2002. Kenney previously served AMR Corp. as managing director, corporate finance and banking, and held various management positions at United Airlines and Morton International Inc.

"The board reviews succession plans and alternatives on an ongoing basis, and Brian's appointment is the result of this thorough process," said Zech in a prepared statement. "He couples financial expertise with a deep understanding of our core businesses, strategic initiatives, opportunities and challenges … [and] was integral to our success in managing through the recent economic downturn."

A finance and leasing company, GATX offers rail-car, locomotive and aircraft operating leases.
