The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority has promoted Janet Burney to deputy general manager and legal affairs/general counsel, effective July 31, agency officials announced this week.

GCRTA's deputy general counsel, Burney has more than 40 years of experience in private- and public-sector law.

"After a very competitive national search, we were delighted to find ... Ms. Burney to be the best fit for this role," said GCRTA GM and CEO India Birdsong in a press release.

Prior to joining the transit agency in 2012, Burney was a judge in Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas-Juvenile Division. She also once served as chief assistant director of law for the city of Cleveland.

Additionally, Burney has been a hospital administrator and registered nurse.
