Rail News: Railroading People
Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) President John Hellmann now holds the short-line holding company’s top two posts. He recently became chief executive officer to succeed Mortimer Fuller III, who will serve as executive chairman per a succession plan instituted in May 2005.
Hellmann joined GWI as chief financial officer in 2000 and became president in 2005. Fuller had served as CEO since he purchased a controlling interest in GWI in 1977. His great-grandfather Edward Fuller founded the Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Co. in 1899.
“We have a unique franchise as the only publicly traded, international operator of regional freight railroads,” said Hellmann in a prepared statement. “We will continue to execute our growth strategy with the same disciplined approach that has created significant shareholder value over the past 30 years.”
GWI owns regionals and short lines in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Bolivia.
