Florida East Coast Railway President and Chief Executive Officer James Hertwig has been elected chairman of the Transportation Institute at the University of Denver (DTI).

Hertwig was unanimously elected to the position by DTI's 50-member board. His leadership in the transportation industry "promises to deliver even more momentum and enhancements" to DTI's programs, said outgoing Chair Adriene Bailey in a press release.

Hertwig has 46 years of freight transportation experience. Prior to joining Florida East Coast in July 2010, Hertwig served as president of CSX Intermodal Inc. for six years.

He also has served in leadership roles at Landstar Logistics, Carolina Freight Carriers Corp., Red Arrow Freight Lines and Con-Way Intermodal.

"DTI is a fantastic example of industry/academic partnership and Jim is a testament to that thriving partnership, being one of the most accomplished leaders in our industry who has had experience leading companies in several modal sectors," said Michael McGuire, dean of University College.

Hertwig is scheduled to be a presenter at RailTrends 2017, a two-day rail-industry conference sponsored by Progressive Railroading. The conference will be held Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in New York City.
