The National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association (NRC) announced last week that former Chairman Terry Benton died Nov. 10 at his home in Durant, Iowa. He was 69.
Benton chaired NRC's board from 2013 to 2014, and served as a board member for 13 years, according to a an NRC press release. He retired in 2021 after spending nearly 50 years in the railroad industry.
Benton began his career as an agent with the Rock Island Railroad. He later worked on the Iowa Interstate Railroad before moving to the contracting side, holding management positions with Loram, TESCO, W.A. Smith, Herzog, L.A. Colo & Sons and Colo Railroad Builders.
Benton eagerly shared his expertise and enthusiasm for the rail industry with others, said NRC President Ashley Wieland.
“I was fortunate to work with Terry during my first years with the association, which was when he served as chairman," Wieland said. "Terry was a strong leader and mentor. He advanced the interests of contractors and suppliers through his dedicated service on the board."
Benton is survived by his children, Tyler Benton (Kasey) and Brittney Ingles (Dennis); brother Doug Vorrath (Margarita); sister Gloria Martin (Jeff); and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lynne.
