The Indiana Rail Road Co.’s (INRD) board has hired Joseph Gioe as the company’s new president and chief executive officer effective Aug. 12. Gioe will replace Dewayne Swindall, who left the company May 31.

Gioe has held leadership positions at two Class Is, with the majority of his career at BNSF Railway Co., where he was twice named employee of the year for intermodal-train execution and delivery of major infrastructure projects. He also served as vice president of transportation at Norfolk Southern Railway.

Gioe began his railroad career as a locomotive engineer and front-line supervisor in 2005 and rose through management roles of increasing responsibility. As INRD’s top executive, Gioe will focus on safety, service, efficiency and employee development.

He has consistently demonstrated his ability to lead his teams to higher levels of performance through team building and communication, INRD officials said in a press release.

NRD is a 250-mile rail network serving central and southwest Indiana, and central Illinois.
