KCS' Mike Haverty to receive 'railroad innovator' honor at RailTrends

Progressive Railroading has named Kansas City Southern Executive Chairman Mike Haverty the 2011 recipient of its “Railroad Innovator Award,” which recognizes an individual’s outstanding achievement in the rail industry. He will receive the award during Progressive Railroading’s annual RailTrends® conference, to be held Nov. 1-2 at the W New York in New York City. Registration for RailTrends® opens on Friday June 24.

As Santa Fe Railway President in 1989, Haverty brought together two unlikely business partners — the Santa Fe and trucking firm J.B. Hunt Transport Inc. — to initiate intermodal service. Haverty’s efforts prompted the University of Denver’s Intermodal Transportation Institute to recognize him as an intermodal founding father.

After taking the reins at KCS in 1993, Haverty repositioned the railroad as a competitive north-south carrier, notably via the KCS-Transportación Marítima Mexicana joint venture’s $1.4 billion bid in 1996 for Mexico’s 2,445-mile Northeast Railway, in which KCS acquired the controlling interest in 2005. In addition to his executive chairman duties, Haverty — who served as KCS' chief executive officer from 1995 to 2010 — is chairman of Kansas City Southern Railway Co. and Kansas City Southern de México S.A de C.V., and co-chairman of the Panama Canal Railway Co.

Haverty is a strategic thinker who’s willing and able to read between the North American rail map’s lines, make sense of what he’s read and plan/manage accordingly — the reasons Progressive Railroading's staff believe he has earned the “innovator” honor. Progressive Railroading previously presented Railroad Innovator Awards to BNSF Railway Co. Chairman and CEO Matt Rose in 2010 and former CN President and CEO E. Hunter Harrison in 2009.
