Harpal Kapoor can remove “interim” from his director title at Miami-Dade Transit (MDT). Yesterday, the agency announced he’s officially been appointed to the top post after serving as interim director since March.

Kapoor first joined MDT in 1985, rising to assistant general superintendent before leaving in 1999 to join the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority, where he served as assistant manager of bus engineering for six years. Kapoor rejoined MDT in February 2006 as deputy director of operations.

The agency currently is in the midst of implementing the People’s Transportation Plan, a multi-billion-dollar improvement program being funded through a voter-approved half-cent sales tax. The program calls for building three Metrorail extensions: a 9.5-mile North Corridor from MDT’s existing Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza station to the Broward County Line; a 2.4-mile extension from Metrorail’s Earlington Heights station to the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC); and a 10.1-mile East-West Corridor that would run from MIC to Florida International University’s Tamiami campus.
