Sheila Kuehl has been appointed chair of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro).

As chair, she succeeds LA Mayor Eric Garcetti. An LA County supervisor, Kuehl previously served as Metro's first vice chair.

"We have a great number of truly exciting projects and initiatives coming to fruition and I look forward to continuing our focus on our riders and employees, especially regarding the ways in which our programs impact women, who have their own unique experiences and concerns," Kuehl said in a press release.

She also plans to work with Metro's Women and Girls Council on training and hiring more women.

Metro's 13-member board is composed of the five LA County supervisors, LA's mayor, four members appointed by the LA County Selection Committee and three members appointed by the mayor.

The chair position rotates between the three groups. Kuehl's term extends through June 30, 2019.
